SRA Consults on Strengthening Notification Requirements to Help Identify Early Risks

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has launched a consultation on proposed changes to its regulatory framework that would require law firms to notify it of specific business events, including when they begin holding client money and when they intend to merge with or acquire another firm.
The proposed requirements are designed to provide the SRA with earlier visibility of developments that may increase regulatory or financial risk. By receiving information sooner, the regulator aims to identify potential issues at an earlier stage, take proactive supervisory action where necessary, and strengthen protections for client money while maintaining public confidence in legal services.
These proposals form part of the SRA’s broader programme of reforms aimed at enhancing safeguards around client funds, improving governance, and strengthening risk management across the legal sector.

Legal Services First Sector Selected for Government AI Growth Lab

The Advisory AI Growth Lab is a government-funded programme that provides a regulator-supported environment for developing, testing, and deploying AI tools responsibly. The legal services sector will be the first to take part, reflecting its importance to the UK economy.
The initiative will bring together innovators, legal service providers, and regulators to trial AI tools. The SRA will work with other legal regulators to identify regulatory barriers, assess risks, and support innovation, helping to increase confidence in emerging technologies across the legal sector.
AI can improve efficiency, speed, and cost-effectiveness in legal services, but firms must manage the risks. The SRA expects supervisors to remain responsible for oversight, ensure staff are properly trained, and have controls in place to review AI outputs and mitigate potential risks.

SRA AML and Sanctions Data Collection Reminder

The SRA’s annual anti-money laundering (AML) and sanctions data collection exercise will run throughout June and July 2026. The reporting portal opened on Monday 29 June 2026 and the deadline for completion is Monday 27 July 2026.
Firms with no AML-regulated work or sanctions exposure are still required to respond by submitting a nil return.

LAA seeking more family, housing & debt providers

The Legal Aid Agency (LAA) is actively seeking to increase the number of organisations providing family legal aid. The LAA is also looking to expand the number of organisations providing housing and debt legal aid, with opportunities open across a wide range of regions. Applications can be submitted at any time, and contracts awarded under this process would commence as soon as the required verification process has been completed.

Mazur and the Conduct of Litigation - Updated SRA Guidance

In March 2026, the Court of Appeal handed down judgment in Mazur vs others, confirming that the Legal Services Act 2007 (LSA) permits authorised individuals, including solicitors and appropriately authorised CILEx members, to delegate litigation tasks to non-authorised staff, provided such delegation is subject to proper supervision.
Following the judgment, the SRA has updated its effective supervision guidance to reflect revised expectations for solicitors and SRA-regulated firms supervising individuals delivering legal services.
