Sanctions: FCA Findings and Expectations for Law Firms
Monday 30 June 2026 By Olivia Birtles
Sanctions form an integral part of the UK’s foreign and national security, and in recent years the regulatory landscape has become markedly more complex. Since 2022, The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has been reviewing the sanctions systems and controls of FCA-regulated firms across a range of financial service sectors.
The FCA’s review explored how firms identify, manage, and report sanctions risks, and highlighted several recurring weaknesses alongside examples of strong practice. Its findings underline a clear expectation that firms operate robust, risk-based frameworks capable of adapting to evolving sanctions regimes.

Client Money & Compliance Officer Reforms
Friday 26 June 2026 By Georgia Tuckley
Following consultations in November 2024 and February 2026, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has confirmed a series of reforms to strengthen the framework governing client money and the separation of key compliance roles within higher-risk firms. The SRA considers that these reforms will enhance early identification of emerging risks, enable more timely regulatory intervention, and improve the overall protection and safeguarding of client money.

CQS Audits (Conveyancing Quality Scheme Audits)
Thursday 25 June 2026 By Raquel Britton and Femi Ngele
Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS) accreditation must be renewed annually, requiring firms to demonstrate ongoing compliance within an increasingly complex regulatory environment, including alignment with SRA Standards, the Money Laundering Regulations 2017, and the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. A CQS audit assesses whether firms meet these standards in practice.

MLR 2026 Amendments: What SRA-Regulated Firms Need to Do Now
Wednesday 24 June 2026 By Raquel Britton and Femi Ngele
On 9 June 2026, the Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing (Amendment) Regulations 2026 were introduced, accompanied by an explanatory memorandum.
While the changes are framed as technical refinements, they signal a clear regulatory direction: fewer automatic triggers, but greater emphasis on documented, risk‑based decision making.
For SRA‑regulated law firms, this is not a light-touch update. The expected standard has shifted, and firms must now evidence why they have (or have not) treated a matter as high risk. In practice, this means stronger file narratives, updated policies, and more disciplined application of professional judgement.

October 2026 duty rota amendment deadline
Thursday 11 June 2026 By Melanie O'Brien
If your firm needs to make any amendments to the October 2026 duty rotas, it must do so by 11:59pm on Monday 13 July 2026. Firms must use the new 2025 CRM12 form to request amendments and email completed forms to the LAA at crm12@justice.gov.uk by the deadline.
The LAA does not need CRM12 applications if there are no changes to be made. The new members lists (not duty rotas) will be published by Friday 17 July 2026 with firms being allowed a further week to provide any feedback.
