Don’t Miss the Deadline - Practising Certificate and Firm Registration Renewals
Monday 5 October 2026 By Erin Gibson
The practising certificate and firm registration renewal period is now open and will close on 31 October. Firms should ensure that all renewal requirements are completed before the deadline.
All firms must complete their SRA annual return and pay the annual renewal fee.
Firms that achieved new firm authorisation during the 2025/2026 practising year must also ensure that the renewal is completed this year and in all subsequent years.
Individual solicitors, as well as all registered European, foreign and Swiss lawyers, must also ensure that they have renewed their individual practising certificates. This can either be submitted as a part of a firm’s return as a bulk renewal or as an individual application, as applicable.

AML Supervision Reform Transition Update
Thursday 1 October 2026 By Melanie O’Brien
The government has finally provided some indication of the timeframe for the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) assuming responsibility as the Single Professional Services Supervisor (SPSS) for the anti-money laundering supervision of legal, accountancy, and trust and company services providers.
Although there has been no confirmation of a precise date or firm commitment, the government has confirmed that the transition is expected to begin before the end of 2028 and be completed by mid-2030, with firms being onboarded in phases.
In the meantime, solicitors will continue to be supervised by the SRA, with existing supervisory and enforcement arrangements remaining in place until the transition.
